What you need to know when finding your ring size

Before you go to measure your ring size, you need to know how your ring should fit. The ring is meant to be comfortable on your finger, and this means that it should be snug enough to not fall off.

However, it should not be so snug that it won’t turn clockwise or counterclockwise around your finger. Your ring should be loose enough to slide over your knuckle with some resistance.

There are two things you should keep in mind when measuring your ring size:

The ring has to be able to fit over your knuckle.

If your knuckle is a lot wider than the base of your finger where the ring is going to sit, this will affect your ring size. In this case, you should order your ring half a size larger than what your finger base measurement indicates. Otherwise, the ring won’t be able to slide over your knuckle.

The size of your finger will fluctuate depending on temperature.

If your hands are cold, your fingers are likely to be smaller. And if your hands are overheated, your fingers can be swollen. Either way, you should make sure that the ring size you choose will fit your fingers when your hands are neither too cold nor too warm. The best way to ensure that your measurements are accurate is to measure your finger three to four different times.

Now that you know what to consider, there are a couple of different things you can do to find the right ring size. Read on to learn how to measure your ring size.

How to measure your ring size

Option 1: Measure a ring you have using our ring size chart

If you already have a ring that fits you well, but you don’t know the size of that ring, you can measure the inside diameter to find your ring size.

Take your ring and measure the inside diameter in millimeters using a measuring tape or ruler. On our ring size chart, you can see what the different measurements correspond to in Danish ring sizes and US ring sizes.

Once you’ve found your size on the ring size chart, please let us know the shape of the ring you’ve measured and whether it is wide and flat or thin and round on the inside. You can also send us a photo of the ring – this will help us determine what size your raw diamond ring should be.

Please note that RoughDiamonds.dk do not take responsibility for any mistakes made using our ring size chart. However, if you do make a mistake, don’t worry: for a symbolic fee, we can always resize your ring if it doesn’t fit perfectly.

Option 2: Go to a jewellery store and ask for help

If you don’t feel confident that you know how to measure your ring size at home, you can always go to a jewellery store and ask them to help you find the right size. A jeweller will have you try on a ring gauge – a set of try-on rings in different sizes – which will determine your ring size. You can also take a ring you already own to the jewellery store and have it measured on a ring mandrel (a stick used to measure ring sizes).

If you choose either of these approaches, please let us know the shape of the ring gauge or the ring you had measured. We’ll need to know if the ring is wide and flat or thin and round on the inside; this is important to the fit of the ring.
